Seasonal Summer Favorites

Thanks to a growing import market, today’s bride-to-be can choose virtually any flowers she likes for her wedding. But floral experts say some blossoms lend themselves especially well to summer weddings. In addition to the ever-popular roses, lilies and stephanotis, the following flowers and plants are ideal for spring and summer weddings:

Lily of the Valley (Pictured left) From its tiny downcast flowers to its slender curled stem, lily of the valley is the ultimate symbol of grace. Also, the wedding-bell-shaped blooms are an adorable nod to your nuptials. The flowers are very fragile, however, and can be costly, so they work perfectly in small arrangements.

Calla Lilies If you’re looking for a bloom that is both traditional and stylish, try the calla lily. Both soft and structural, the creamy white calla lily is perfect as an addition to bouquets or as an elegant, art deco–inspired single-flower arrangement.

Sweet Pea These charming summertime flowers have a delicate scent and cheerfully unpredictable shape and habit. Their asymmetrical petals bring visual interest to your arrangement.

Dahlias (Pictured right) Available in many colors and sizes, including the enormous “dinner-plate dahlia,” this interesting multi-petal flower often steals the show in bouquet or table arrangements.

Hydrangeas (Pictured left) These classic blooms recall memories of summertime at your grandmother’s, and they add delicate elegance to bouquets, centerpieces, and cakes. They are readily available everywhere, from farms to friends’ front yards, making them a great option for the DIY bride.

Orchids Once a sign of wealth and privilege, the exotic bloom of orchids is a popular choice for the summer bride. The petals of the orchid are waxy and robust, and more resistant to drying out than other flowers. Available in endless varieties and colors, the bride-to-be can find the perfect orchid to complement her wedding style.
